What A Poet Is - Eavan Boland
In case you ever wondered what a poet is... and in case you didn't, you should have...especially if you write poetry...and if you don't, shame on you...how do you expect to become a better fiction writer anyway?
So Eavan is giving me a hard stare and kindly refuses my offer of a G&T.
"What we find in a poet," she says, "is always a volatile mixture of knowledge and self-knowledge. The best poems are anti-historic: they survive change. History fixes an experience in the moment. The good poem does the opposite. It takes an experience and builds a shelter for it in language and craft which protects it forever from the erosions of time and space."
